NBT will produce five original theatrical productions per year, three in our black box and two on the main stage. The range of styles within any given season will vary from experimental performance to opera, from large-cast musicals to small dramatic works. An emphasis will be placed on world premiere works and artists that have a long-standing relationship to Brooklyn.
Educational and relevant programs will accompany all shows in the black box and on the mainstage.
In an effort to forge relationships with our community and implore the importance of arts education, NBT will have teaching artists work with public and charter schools in our neighborhood to help local students create original work.
The sound system installed in the Mainstage will be fully equipped with a sound package capable of attracting top-billing musical artists. In addition to being a high profile system, our venue will have the capability to make multi-track live recordings. These recordings will be an attraction for rentals, live music video shoots, in-house production documentation and a valuable tool for ensuring that NBT reaches a larger audience.
The Cafe will provide an additional space for emerging musicians, writers and thinkers to share their work in a more intimate space.
NBT will host and curate several film series to further celebrate artists and explore themes related to our current theatrical productions. Screenings will be paired with conversations with either those affiliated with the film or relevant topics within.
We will also host the ongoing series Regent/Slave Night which will serve as a reminder of the enduring social impact that our landmark building has had in Brooklyn by uncovering and screening films that had their premiere in our century-old building.
In addition we will plan the Hometown Heroes Film Series, which will focus on presenting retrospectives of the work of Brooklyn actors, musicians, writers and directors who have called Brooklyn home. Artists include Jay-Z, Spike Lee, Noah Baumbach, Mel Brooks, Steve Buscemi, Marisa Tomei and Eli Wallach.
